"However, as much as we're intrigued by the notion of taking a sledgehammer to a downstairs restroom or throwing a frisbee into a fellow golfer's face (as Watanabe apparently did), the winner of this week is another athletic figment of imagination: Weber-Gale, who not only conjured the image of himself and Shaq hanging out at "some crazy club," but also added the comical snapshot of a two-time Olympic swimming champion and 7-foot-1, 325-pound NBA center giddily churning down water slides that they should have outgrown two gold medals ago (or in the case of Shaq, some 200 lbs. ago).
"And for that, we are appreciative."
I Want My Nachos!!!
[caption id="attachment_1154" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Gooey. Salty. Fatty. "]
[/caption]
But I never eat them. All that gooey cheese, fatty meat, over-the-top salt is just not what I (or anyone really) should be eating, especially when training. It got me thinking. Maybe when I get home I'll try to make some healthy nachos...
Do you ever make healthy nachos? What do you put on them? Let me know!
Tuesday Tweet of the Week: Naked Pizza…Naked Goodness
[caption id="attachment_1072" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="This beauty was inspired by the folks at Naked Pizza"]
[/caption]
Pizza! Pizza! I love the stuff. Actually I'm a freak for it. Last summer in Italy I ate slice after slice after slice. At the conclusion of my month long 'stage' at a restaurant in the countryside of Italy (Castello delle Regine) I even came back with a tried and tested, delicious recipe for dough. The recipe was based from a type of baker's yeast which is 'live', not dormant. Dormant yeast is the kind you find in the packets in stores...it becomes activated with warm water. Upon my return to Austin a local grocery store carried the yeast...I was in luck. Every week I was making a pizza or two loaded with veggies. Unfortunately my luck ran out. The grocery store stopped carrying my sacred yeast. I attempted many times to recreate the magic which was once my Umbrian pizza crust delight, but to no avail. I was sunk. The dormant yeast which comes in the tiny little balls just doesn't give the same end result. Trust me I was super bummed. After searching all over Austin for the 'live' yeast with no luck, I finally gave up.
Recently I had the urge to try for a great pizza dough once more. I decided to message some guys who seem to really know what they're doing. @NakedPizza is out of New Orleans and has been serving up some healthy and down right delectable looking pizzas for a good bit of time now. You need to see some of their twitpics of the tasty creations their coming up with.
This was @NakedPizzas response to me when I asked for some advice about making a pizza dough...
@G_WeberGale min 6 flours. canola oil (not olive). no sugar. used flaked spices, not powder. let dough sit 3-4 days b4 use.
The second response is very intriguing...
@G_WeberGale we shud develop a pizza together - swim like the fishes kind of good for u. we r rolling national. engage ppl 4 btr health.
What would I call it!? What would I put on it? What would you put on your ultimate pizza?
Tuesday Tweet of the Week: Dang Fruit Flies!!!
Pesky little fruit flies. No rotten fruit. No decaying carcass on my counter. So what's the deal? Why do these annoying little flies continue to invade my kitchen? I've even seen a couple upstairs and that got me riled up! After clearing my counters, putting things in the refrigerator and smashing as many as I possibly can in my fingers, I'd had enough. I did what anyone in the 21st century would do...when you don't know where to turn, ask your Twitter followers. I got an amazing number of responses on how to wipe out the population in my kitchen. A few of the best @Replies from the Twitterverse on fruit flies... @boblegault Fruit Flies. Cantaloupe in a small bowl, under plastic wrap, lift an edge. Flies can't escape. Take outside, or squish 'em. @breanne_d cup of vinegar, saran wrap the top & seal with an elastic, poke tiny holes in the top of saran wrap with a tooth pick :) @StretchChi sugar water in a jar. Cover with celophane and poke little holes. They crawl in but can't fly out. They die a very sweet death @Steffieflies Do you have any potted plants inside your house? They feed off fungus on the plants, so you might want to get a fungicide...
Tuesday Tweet: My Favorite Movie, “The Man from Snowy River”
[caption id="attachment_855" align="alignleft" width="240" caption="This was my favorite as a kid!"]
[/caption]
My best friend growing up was a guy named Brian. He's now a fourth-year medical student and we still stay in close touch. Our absolute favorite movie was "The Man from Snowy River". We watched it over and over and still watch it. (My mom says watching it is the first test of compatibility for anyone I might date.) It's a film about wild horses, rough riding, a few tough fights and a little bit of love.
I popped it on the other night while relaxing during a recent swim meet in Texas and then tweeted for other suggestions on good Westerns. (Since Snowy River is set in Australia, I guess it's not really a Western. Although you're not going to see better horseback riding anywhere.)
I'm writing about this for two reasons: 1) I love the movie. 2) Sometimes when you race or train, you need to take your mind OFF of swimming. Pick a good movie, read a book, cook something, relax with friends...do whatever it takes to give your mind a rest.
Oh yeah, this week's tweets are Western movie suggestions:
From @austinfarm2tbl: @G_WeberGale old school: True Grit, The Good The Bad & The Ugly and The Sons of Katie Elder. New(er): The Unforgiven & 3:10 to Yuma.
From @northstar99: @G_WeberGale Lonesome Dove. Epic :)
From @shellastew: @G_WeberGale McClintock or Big Jake--the only J. Wayne movies I like. Or Young Guns...or Tombstone...
From ozoellner: @G_WeberGale legends of the fall!
From @ricoswim24: @G_WeberGale 3:10 to yuma. It's with Russell Crowe and Christian Bale
From CSledge89: @G_WeberGale-- "The Alamo" by John Wayne. The full 3_hour uncut version. One of the best movies ever made!
From @svik2582 : @G_WeberGale Blazing Saddles....ha...does that count? Maybe?
From @Christybelle: @G_WeberGale How the West Was Won..
Well, that's a bunch of them at least. Sorry if I missed any...let me know of others. Now go enjoy!
Tuesday tweeting myself: Yeah you can cheat on the eats…but only rarely!
If you followed my trip to Montreal on Twitter, you know that I had a monumental dining experience at Au Pied de Couchon, a crazy great spot. The food was amazingly good and unusual but not particularly healthy, at least as related to my normal diet. As I reflected in one of my tweets,
@offalchris Poutine was delicious! Do people make this in the US? If not they should! PS y'all this is NOT healthy stuff I'm eating tonight so it is a Big and RARE treat for me... We can cheat sometimes. My dad told me about some research he saw showing that when people deprive themselves of special treats, they crave them more and more. So I allow myself the occasional over-the-top meal or a special dessert now and then. It gives me a taste break AND a mental break from the rigors of training. Plus it's just fun! As I learn more and more about food, I hope to continue to find more and more ways to create great-tasting food that is also healthy. (That's why I co-founded AthleticFoodie) Walk into anything but a specialty restaurant, and you know how hard it can be to get a truly healthy meal that is more than a bad compromise. So what did I do when I got back to Austin? Had a good and healthy snack that is reflective of probably 98 percent of my diet:
Eating some whole wheat/grain cereal with flax-seed, berries, almond milk. Going for tons of veggies and leafy greens tonightFor dinner, I went to Casa de Luz. It's quite a different atmosphere from where I had eaten the night before. The hearty vegan fare, however, was also wonderful. Here's what @thinkbirdies said about it in response to my tweet:
@G_WeberGale I love Casa De Luz! I've literally been eating there since day 1 of that place. How often do you go dine there??
Tweet of the Week: Celebrity Chef Tom Colicchio says eat Louisiana seafood
We've all seen plenty about the mess in the Gulf of Mexico. Most of us are helpless to do anything about the oil spill. That's why it was nice to see celebrity Chef Tom Colicchio heading south to see what he could do to help. In case you don't know, Colicchio is more than a celebrity. The guy has serious chef credentials. Many say he is one of the best in America. Recently chef Colicchio won the James Beard award for 2010 Outstanding Chef!
Some with fame and money sit back and enjoy the good life. Others, try to have a positive impact on the world.
Tweets from Tom:
@andersoncooper heading down to grand Isle on sunday to witness first hand the devastation of the gulf fishing industry.
Out in the gulf strong smell of oil many shrimp boats moving boom around.
Eating louisana crab and shrimp, some of the fishing grounds are still open.
@MelissLockwood constant testing plus fisherman caught in closed federal waters will lose their license to fish.
A response from @annabrown86 2:53pm via TweetDeck appreciating his effortsLove him! RT @JessProducer: Bravo celeb chef @Tom_Colicchio says he's going to use Gulf seafood at his restaurants. Yay for him! #oilspill
And one more from Chef Colicchio@andersoncooper plenty of louisiana seafood available and safe please tell this story
Tuesday Tweet–MY MOM!!
It was bound to happen, my mom is now on Twitter. You can find and follower her at foodiemumma. I think it is an absolutely great thing. She's going to help me promote the AthleticFoodie concept. She might be surprised at how many people are interested in an Olympic Mom. There is so much she and my dad did to help me get to the gold medal stand in Beijing. Now my mom has a new way to share it.
Her tweets started with the obvious, just like all of us, and then moved into a little commentary:
Taking tweeting lessons with Hunter @tatertoten @plnsng
Well another new restaurant opened in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, and unfortunately nothing for #Vegans to eat. Someday hopefully it will improve
Local WI Farmers' Market new layout. Organic and non-organic sections. More non. Wonder if organic farmers will sell as much on their own.
Who knows where her tweeting might go. I do know that it's going to be fun to watch as she tweets about vegan, vegetarian, healthy eating, the Olympics, who knows... Give foodiemumma a follow and see where she leads you.
Tuesday Tweet: May the best taco win
It started simple enough on Sunday: "What do you want to eat tonight?" Pretty soon my dad (AthleticFoodie) and I were in a taco battle. Both of us wanted to try something new. So, two tweets this week:
@AthleticFoodie Chopping fresh jalapeno w @G_WeberGale both started coughing, fingers burning...bring on the tacos! @AthleticFoodie Taco face-off w @G_WeberGale - Mine, tofu marinated in lime, cilantro, jalapeno. His, seared scallops w sweet red peppers. Pretty darn good.My dad's recipe for these tofu tacos was pretty simple. Marinate firm tofu in lime juice, cilantro, chopped tomato, and diced jalapeno peppers. We ate them with fresh corn tortillas smeared with some vegetarian refried beans (quite healthy) and just a dusting of sharp cheddar. Cheese with strong taste allows you to use a little less and still enjoy flavor. [caption id="attachment_753" align="aligncenter" width="458" caption="I have to admit that these tacos were pretty darn good. The simple recipe was easy to prepare."]
[/caption]
My recipe was even easier--lightly season the scallops with a little pepper and a dusting of low-sodium sea salt. While they are resting, saute sweet red peppers and some onions in a non-stick pan. Serve with a little salsa, avocado slices and a dusting of cheese (not sure cheddar was quite the right choice). We used whole wheat tortillas.
[caption id="attachment_755" align="aligncenter" width="448" caption="Scallop tacos? Why not! The sweet red peppers and scallops go well together. "]
[/caption]
Who won? Who cares! We certainly had a great dinner.
Spring time is rhubarb time…at least where I grew up
Today's Tuesday Tweet of the Week is really a multiple tweeter. In honor of my 89-year-old grandma and the great memories she gave me by making rhubarb pies, I would like to feature several tweets and links:
[caption id="attachment_708" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="The beginnings of a great treat"]
[/caption]
Yes, I still treat myself to the occasional pie. The trick is to eat a piece and not the entire thing!
