Taper Tips

Things to make sure I do on taper:

  • Minimize walking.
  • Minimize standing.
  • Get to bed early. Brendan Hansen always told me the most important sleep is before midnight.
  • Continue to keep on my diet.
  • Have a good working relationship with my coach so we are both on the same page with my swimming.
  • Work on speed in the water at least three times a week.
  • Stay hydrated.
  • Smile…:)

What are some of your taper tips? I’d love to benefit from some of your’s as well!

My coach always says, “Become one with the couch. Good taper tip!” :)

I think you’ve pretty much summed up my taper ideals. Smiling and not stressing is a big one!
In addition to working speed I need a little pain reminder every couple of days, and as a breaststroke swimmer I make every effort to avoid the stroke like the plague from 8 days out :-)

Keep a positive attitude! Mind set is very important to fast swimming.

I have not tapered in a long…………time …key word long time! But good mental preparation, one of my old coaches used to have us imagine the race and mentally prepare to imagine the goal each of us was trying to achieve. Also, with training for a tennis match, swimming laps, or running for a 5K good music to put you in that zone! Rock on!

Thank you for the Taper tips. I printed them out and gave them to my 13 year old daughter to read. She is getting ready for a “Last Chance” JO qualifier meet this weekend and JOs in 2 weeks. After reading, she decided on her own to skip the beach with her best friend today in favor of laying low.

Being on the same page is so important. Although you need to be in tune with your coach it’s very crucial to give your input as well. No one knows how you feel better than you. Taper is an art.

Not swimming your main stroke 8 days out…? What the heck! I need to touch up some pace and sprints with my freestyle before then. But hey if it works for you go with it…

      Visualization is a big one!

Great tips! Nice to have them written out to stare at for reminders every day.

visualize your race and time how long it takes you to swim it in your head. Aim for the time that you want to swim the event in….another tip….if race is stresssing your out but your thoughts in a “box” inside your head so you cant think about them…eveytime you start to worry about it close the imaginary lid…sounds stupid but actually works
